Episode 12: And Michael Phelps Would Win That, Too

Episode 12: And Michael Phelps Would Win That, Too

We emerge from our post-Olympic haze and try to make sense of a world without rings and medals and triumphant fanfare. Jet Wolf may never love again.

  • Around here it was the 2012 London Olympics all day every day, so we’ve got to deal with those feels first. We discuss our general thoughts about the games, specific hates about NBC, the American culture clash, and just what was up with those Opening Ceremonies anyway?
    [00:00:36 – 00:33:24]
  • Other games are also happening! It’s another look at What We’re Playing. Nikki enthuses about Assassin’s Creed 2 and Defense Grid while Mike talks up Beat Hazard and Scott Pilgrim. Then there’s that Skyrim disdain that takes us both by surprise. Also, PAX is coming! Holy crap!
    [00:33:32 – 01:04:18]
  • Is the Green Goblin Spidey’s archvillain?, Nikki wonders aloud. This leads us on a discussion about what makes a great archvillain and if it’s possible to have one years after the hero’s introduction.
    [01:04:26 – 01:17:05]
  • The Final Round, in which we wind up talking about Rock Band and Harmonix for six minutes.

Episode 10: We Don’t Have Much to Say (A 90 Minute Podcast)

Episode 10: We Don't Have Much to Say (A 90 Minute Podcast)

It’s our first Listener’s Choice show! All the topics were suggested by YOU, the Listener, so you’ve only yourselves to blame. This was done entirely in the spirit of audience participation and not at all because we have no idea what’s going on out there.

  • Once again Marvel is pissing us off, and despite claims of not going into it, Jet Wolf still somehow manages to not shut up. Turns out we both really hate Avengers vs. X-Men, but become oddly apathetic to the latest round of cancellations. We talk about characters and how to completely ignore them, how much Nikki loves Mike Carey, and even a bit about the speculator market which must still be out there ruining it for the rest of us.
    [00:00:38 – 00:37:18]
  • Sailor Moon is returning! How do we feel about that? Mostly just passingly curious, but then the conversation turns to the anime we used to love and enthusiasm heightens. Bubblegum Crisis? You’ll be surprised/horrified by what Mike would do to get the series on blu-ray.
    [00:37:26 – 00:56:30]
  • Someone wanted to know who our favourite classic wrestlers were, and Nikki answers but with no small amount of shame. We quickly move to something much more interesting: exactly how incredibly awesome was Macho Man Randy Savage? ANSWER: So incredibly fucking awesome. HE’S STILL GOT THIS.
    [00:56:37 – 01:15:34]
  • The Final Round, where we go off on a tangent about Disney shorts vs. Warner Brothers shorts, and Mike is reduced to tears. Always the mark of a successful segment.

Episode 9: Sick Romans and Crusty Jugglers

Episode 9: Sick Romans and Crusty Jugglers

This week is all about meth and misogyny. Fun times, fun times.

  • It’s been a bad week to be into video games and comic books and have a uterus. We’ve had to deal with the new Tomb Raider game “Press X To Not Be Raped”, the staggering hate surrounding the Tropes vs. Women in Video Games project [link], and the laugh-or-you’ll-cry cover to Catwoman #0 [link]. Jet Wolf has thoughts and feelings and she and ladybits are going to tell you all about them.
  • In keeping with tradition, we finished Breaking Bad about a year behind everyone else. With the fifth and final season around the corner, we talk about our impressions of last year’s finale and what we hope to see at the close of this dark and fascinating series. Mostly though Ultrace just really hates Walt. [Warning: spoilers for seasons 1-4 of Breaking Bad.]
  • The Final Round, in which Jet Wolf makes Ultrace cry.

Episode 8: Kind of a Douchebag

Episode 8: Kind of a Douchebag

This is the week of Horrible People. Upon listening to this, congratulations, for you too become A Horrible Person. It’s like a gift with purchase.

  • What begins as a conversation about Cards Against Humanity turns into a venting session about 38 Studios, and finally the inflated entitlement of gamers that helped get us into this mess in the first place. But mostly what you should take away is that Curt Schilling is a very bad man.
  • Community has finished out its third season, however that triumph was quickly deflated by the news of Dan Harmon’s firing. But who are we really upset with? The answer may surprise you.
  • The Final Round brings easy answers but a pleasant little segue that ultimately involves midgets. So there’s that.

Episode 5: Dick Clark, Nature’s Own Cyborg

Episode 5: Dick Clark, Nature's Own Cyborg

In this episode we run the gamut from cutting edge current events to a segment we recorded weeks ago, mashing it all together and hoping you don’t notice. Also we implant into your brain the image of a rapping holographic Abe Lincoln. Really, you should be paying us for this stuff.

  • Dick Clark has passed, but he leaves us with a lifetime of memories and, we hope, the gateway to an exciting new world of Hollywood abusing dead celebrities for its own gain. I mean, can Dick Clark truly die? And should we allow this to happen if technology can save us?
  • The Avengers are coming. Jet Wolf has a happy little bitch about Avengers vs. X-Men (why does no one think of Rachel Summers??) Then we get excited about the upcoming movie for a second before starting to complain about that too. There’s a lot of complaining in this segment is what I’m saying. Also, Hank Pym is a jerk.
  • Jet Wolf finishes Mass Effect 3 and she talks about it a bit with Ultrace, who hasn’t. This is a spoiler-free discussion about the general nature of the ending, why it maybe wasn’t what people were expecting, and what the future may (or may not) hold.
  • The Final Round, where Ultrace poses the hardest question anyone has ever had to answer.

Episode 4: Surprise! Jedis Kinda Suck.

Episode 4: Surprise! Jedis Kinda Suck.

Despite seeing each other every single day, Jet Wolf & Ultrace somehow manage to enthuse over a dozen different topics this week. It’s one long geeky chat and YOU’RE INVITED. Not to the actual chat. That happened already. But to listen to the past. And pretend. BYOB.

Among (many) other things we discuss:

  • The triumphant (kinda?) return of Community.
  • Spider-Man, the state of the X-Men, Daredevil and how Mike will fight Mark Waid to the death.
  • We’ve just started playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, and what begins as a discussion about its place in the world of MMOs somehow becomes Nikki talking about how much she hates Jedi.
  • Wasteland 2 is coming and Mike is stoked. He tells you why you should be too, and then Nikki gets all cynical about Kickstarter because of course she does.
  • The Final Round, where a statement is made that I guarantee you never, ever expected anyone to utter.

Episode 3: This Is My Favourite Podcast On The Citadel

Episode 3: This Is My Favourite Podcast On The Citadel

Mass Effect 3 is out, and we are excited, excited people. This week we can do little more than have an enthusiastic conversation about it, thus ostracizing that portion of our listening base that doesn’t actually care about video games. Yes, amazingly those people exist and they listen. I’d like to see the Venn diagram on that one.

  • Mass Effect 3 is the topic du jour, and we touch on our feelings about ME3 specifically, new features in the game, the series as a whole, what sets it apart from other role-playing games, how it could change the face of the RPG genre, and the awesomeness of Commander Shepard. We keep it spoiler-free, so listen without fear.
  • The Final Round. We keep to our theme, yet Ultrace is still somehow totally unprepared.

Episode 2: A Hate Letter to Katniss Everdeen

Episode 2: A Hate Letter to Katniss Everdeen

This week Jet Wolf and Ultrace over-discuss:

  • The Borderlands 2 release date trailer. “Excited” is an insufficient word for Ultrace’s level of enthusiasm.
  • Hunger Games, oh Hunger Games, how you have plagued us. Jet Wolf especially has Thoughts About Things. [Note that this is a spoiler-heavy discussion. You’ll want to jump to 59:23 from when we caution you about spoilers to avoid them. Yes, this means most of this episode is Jet Wolf bitching about Hunger Games.]
  • The Final Round. We again challenge each other with pointless comparisons. How is Ultrace so much better at this than I am?

Episode 1: Rick Rolls and FemSheps and DC (oh my)

Episode 1: Rick Rolls and FemSheps and DC (oh my)

Jet Wolf and Ultrace begin their adventure in podcasting with a few of their favourite things. Listen along as we discuss (at length):

  • The latest Rock Band DLC announcement. That was the most requested song? Really?
  • Mass Effect’s latest trailer. As FemShep finally takes the spotlight, we debate the pros and cons of a named, defined RPG protagonist.
  • DC’s New 52. The numbers are rolling in, and they aren’t looking good. What’s wrong with this industry that we love? Why the hell won’t everyone just turn over complete control to us? So many questions.
  • The Final Round. How better to close out a show than with an impossible choice? Though some are more impossiblier than others.
