Episode 12: And Michael Phelps Would Win That, Too

Episode 12: And Michael Phelps Would Win That, Too

We emerge from our post-Olympic haze and try to make sense of a world without rings and medals and triumphant fanfare. Jet Wolf may never love again.

  • Around here it was the 2012 London Olympics all day every day, so we’ve got to deal with those feels first. We discuss our general thoughts about the games, specific hates about NBC, the American culture clash, and just what was up with those Opening Ceremonies anyway?
    [00:00:36 – 00:33:24]
  • Other games are also happening! It’s another look at What We’re Playing. Nikki enthuses about Assassin’s Creed 2 and Defense Grid while Mike talks up Beat Hazard and Scott Pilgrim. Then there’s that Skyrim disdain that takes us both by surprise. Also, PAX is coming! Holy crap!
    [00:33:32 – 01:04:18]
  • Is the Green Goblin Spidey’s archvillain?, Nikki wonders aloud. This leads us on a discussion about what makes a great archvillain and if it’s possible to have one years after the hero’s introduction.
    [01:04:26 – 01:17:05]
  • The Final Round, in which we wind up talking about Rock Band and Harmonix for six minutes.

Episode 11: The Great Batsby & The Spectacular Spider-Bartlet

Episode 11: The Great Batsby & The Spectacular Spider-Bartlet

It’s a comic booky-y kind of summer, and our excited little butts go into excited little seats for two movies that leave us feeling not quite as excited as we started. It’s Jet Wolf & Ultrace versus The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises, with some bonus swearing at NBC!

  • We first tackle The Amazing Spider-Man, wrestling it to the ground and beating it with rocks. Mike is a professional adult and was nearly brought to tears, this movie upset him so. He works through some issues (by which I mean he doesn’t really work through anything at all) and is only too happy to tell you exactly why he hates everything about this movie. Except for Gwen Stacy. And Uncle Ben. And Aunt May. Okay, so it’s sort of only Spider-Man we hate, but you have to admit that’s a bit of a problem for a film called Spider-Man. [Beware Spoilers]
    [00:00:40 – 00:33:14]
  • The Dark Knight Rises is also put against the post and offered a final cigarette. Two hours and forty minutes? Really, Christopher Nolan? Really? [Beware Spoilers]
    [00:33:22 – 00:57:55]
  • It’s Olympic time, and Nikki could not possibly be more excited. Unless, of course, the property went into the hands of absolutely anybody not NBC. We talk about the ridiculous idea that in 2012 we still can’t see things live, and old wounds are poked with dirty sticks. Seriously, just fuck everything about Jerry Seinfeld.
    [00:58:02 – 01:09:57]
  • The Final Round, where we manage to have the most difficult question ever alongside the easiest.

Episode 7: Won’t Somebody Please Hug Chris Traeger?

Episode 7: Won't Somebody Please Hug Chris Traeger?

This week we thought about going with a theme then completely failed to do so. It’s the first of many failures this week, but they’re not all ours. For shame, Walking Dead. For shame.

  • Television is back! Well actually no, it’s nearly summer and all TV is going away, but for us it’s like so totally back! New hardware has flicked a spark at the cold pilot light of our love and we’ve been going through TV shows like a demonic lawnmower grinding through the tall grass of overgrown souls. (That is quite possibly the strangest marriage of imagery I’ve ever written.) We talk about how mass consumption of TV seasons can alter your relationship to the show and how that applies to our recent marathon of The Walking Dead and the long-ago marathon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Plus we say goodbye for now to Parks & Rec, but it’s never far from our heart.
  • The Avengers has got Mike to thinking, and he has a burning question that can wait no longer: Could Wolverine beat the Hulk? A question this important requires no small amount of thought, and oh, the thought we give it. You will believe a couple can get into way too much detail about how to kill Wolverine.
  • The Final Round, where once again Mike makes a one-off comment that brings the entire thing to a screeching halt. Oh, Mike. (And yes I know we consistently say that one guy’s name wrong, I don’t wanna hear it.)

Episode 5: Dick Clark, Nature’s Own Cyborg

Episode 5: Dick Clark, Nature's Own Cyborg

In this episode we run the gamut from cutting edge current events to a segment we recorded weeks ago, mashing it all together and hoping you don’t notice. Also we implant into your brain the image of a rapping holographic Abe Lincoln. Really, you should be paying us for this stuff.

  • Dick Clark has passed, but he leaves us with a lifetime of memories and, we hope, the gateway to an exciting new world of Hollywood abusing dead celebrities for its own gain. I mean, can Dick Clark truly die? And should we allow this to happen if technology can save us?
  • The Avengers are coming. Jet Wolf has a happy little bitch about Avengers vs. X-Men (why does no one think of Rachel Summers??) Then we get excited about the upcoming movie for a second before starting to complain about that too. There’s a lot of complaining in this segment is what I’m saying. Also, Hank Pym is a jerk.
  • Jet Wolf finishes Mass Effect 3 and she talks about it a bit with Ultrace, who hasn’t. This is a spoiler-free discussion about the general nature of the ending, why it maybe wasn’t what people were expecting, and what the future may (or may not) hold.
  • The Final Round, where Ultrace poses the hardest question anyone has ever had to answer.

Episode 4: Surprise! Jedis Kinda Suck.

Episode 4: Surprise! Jedis Kinda Suck.

Despite seeing each other every single day, Jet Wolf & Ultrace somehow manage to enthuse over a dozen different topics this week. It’s one long geeky chat and YOU’RE INVITED. Not to the actual chat. That happened already. But to listen to the past. And pretend. BYOB.

Among (many) other things we discuss:

  • The triumphant (kinda?) return of Community.
  • Spider-Man, the state of the X-Men, Daredevil and how Mike will fight Mark Waid to the death.
  • We’ve just started playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, and what begins as a discussion about its place in the world of MMOs somehow becomes Nikki talking about how much she hates Jedi.
  • Wasteland 2 is coming and Mike is stoked. He tells you why you should be too, and then Nikki gets all cynical about Kickstarter because of course she does.
  • The Final Round, where a statement is made that I guarantee you never, ever expected anyone to utter.

Episode 1: Rick Rolls and FemSheps and DC (oh my)

Episode 1: Rick Rolls and FemSheps and DC (oh my)

Jet Wolf and Ultrace begin their adventure in podcasting with a few of their favourite things. Listen along as we discuss (at length):

  • The latest Rock Band DLC announcement. That was the most requested song? Really?
  • Mass Effect’s latest trailer. As FemShep finally takes the spotlight, we debate the pros and cons of a named, defined RPG protagonist.
  • DC’s New 52. The numbers are rolling in, and they aren’t looking good. What’s wrong with this industry that we love? Why the hell won’t everyone just turn over complete control to us? So many questions.
  • The Final Round. How better to close out a show than with an impossible choice? Though some are more impossiblier than others.
